Improvements New Currency Exchange UI:

The Currency Exchange UI has been overhauled to be quicker to use and easier to understand.

  • Quick exchange options for both currencies are now visible on the front page of the Currency Exchange.

  • The comparison between Exchange for Gold and Exchange for Gems prices is much more obvious.

  • Fixed exchange amounts have been set to simplify the exchange process and remove confusing rounding points.

Anet have explained the change to fixed amounts of gem conversion as a change designed to help newer players, but it's rather clear that this is just PR speak (poorly) designed to hide the reality of why they changed it. I will be the first to admit that much of this is speculation, and it has to be, unless Anet ever admit it, but I believe I present a decent explanation for why this is being done.

As it stands, the minimum is ~75 gold for 400 gems. What "New Player" has 75 Gold, unless they have been buying gems for gold already, in which case they already know how to purchase gems, and use the conversion window. Granted the gold to gems window was a little more confusing as you couldn't just enter the gem amount you wanted, but instead entered the gold you wished to convert. Players with 75 gold have shown themselves to be capable of managing the game, and presumably managing some dungeons, fractals, or other profitable content. Are we to believe they could not understand the simple gem conversion windows? No! This is the clearest indication that is was not for new players.

Anet have always run the gemstore in such a way as to leave players who buy gems for cash with gem amounts after common purchases, or to require them to purchase two lots of gems. Black lion keys leave you with change out of 800 gems, many items were priced at 900 gems, or 500 gems. This is designed to give people incentive to spend the remaining gems, so where I may have only spent my 200 gems on devil horns, I am forced to buy all 800 gems. While some people may leave it at that until the next item they really would have spent money on anyway, it lowers the barrier of entry and people may decide to buy something else on impulse, that they would not have reached for their card for, meaning that when that second item they are willing to spend money comes along, they may need to buy more gems. This change to the conversion window creates the same situation again, where players who wish to purchase devil horns, for example, now need to spend twice as much gold to get them (I'll get back to this), and leaves them with change. That change might be spent on a swimming or killstreak booster (no doubt their biggest sellers ;) ).

Now, you might say that this does not make any more money for Anet, and directly, it does not, as they made the money when someone bought the gems to sell for gold, not when you bought them to buy content, but it does mean that the supply of gems is less, making each more valuable. This makes it harder and harder for people to purchase them with gold, and more and more profitable for people to buy gems to sell for gold. Eventually this would reach a point where it would cancel out, and many people would stop buying gems with gold, prices would drop, and people would buy again (but there are ways around this which I will get to).

Both the fixed amounts of gems, and increase in gem costs make it harder for players to purchase gems with gold. These two issues make it very hard for new players to ever start purchasing gems with gold. Lets take the devil horns again at 200 gems. I have 50 gold in my account, and want the devil horns. In the previous system, I convert ~37g to 200 gems, and purchase my horns, wearing them around for Halloween. In the new system I am faced with the prospect of having to earn 25g more, before I even have the option to purchase gems, and at that point, I must spend all of my money on the gems. I buy 400 gems for ~75g, buy the horns leaving me with 200 gems. I go to convert those back and realise that I can get 20g back for 150 gems because I don't even have the option to spend it all on gold.

Similarly for another player who has maybe 90g. He gets the horns and has 200 gems left. As he still has 15g on his character, he might just spend the remaining gems on the gemstore and deal with being poor for a while rather than "wasting" money on the poor exchange rate back to gold.

But what of the new player who has his 50g but can't quite manage the grind for 25 more right now for the horns? He could have them in the old system but now? Now he considers purchasing gems with cash! More money in anets pocket thanks to this change. Even the player with 90g might decide that the 75g is too much from his savings, and reach for his card to get the horns.

Finally, they have removed the graph, which suggests to me an attempt to hide the behind the scenes workings of gem conversions. Mind you, that was already quite possible, as they control the graph, but it does merge with something I mentioned earlier. If people keep spending more gems bought with gold, then, in a fairly run system, the price would rise as more and more are bought, making the purchase of gems to sell for gold more attractive. However, at a point, people would be more likely to purchase their own gems with cash, rather than gold, as the price got too high, meaning a drop in price, or too many people would flood the market with gems, meaning a drop in price. However, it would be in Anet's best interest to have the gold price of gems keep rising, so that it's too expensive for people to spend gold on them, but also really profitable to sell gems for gold. You can't have both though, either gems are too expensive to purchase, and nobody can sell them, or people are buying gems, and people are selling them. This is the concept for the gem conversion. But that assumes anet don't just lie. Anet can just keep increasing the cost per gem, and if nobody is buying gems with gold who cares, their system still gives out gold to people who sell gems, and that exchange rate never ever needs to come back down. It get's less and less possible for people to ever get gemstore items with gold, and more and more profitable for people to purchase gems to sell for gold. Anet will have essentially removed the ability for all but the most hardcore players to ever get anything with gold, while still being able to say you can purchase store items with gold.

Finally, I'd like to mention that I don't think this is directly Anet's fault. Early on NCSoft (owners of Anet) were partially acquired by nexon, and a "Monetization Lead" was hired, who previously worked for nexon. She is still there, and I believe, one of the major reasons the gem store is so horrible.

So, there's an item in some Trick or Treat bags called "Vials of Maize Balm". They give you a pack that allows you to throw 3 potions. Each potion has a large AoE, and can hit up to 3 en.. Show More

So, there's an item in some Trick or Treat bags called "Vials of Maize Balm".

They give you a pack that allows you to throw 3 potions. Each potion has a large AoE, and can hit up to 3 enemies. It turns them into candy corn elementals.

When you kill the elemental, it drops a ToT bag.

There's an area in The Reliquary (the event instance in The Black Citadel) where a bunch of rats run out at you, you can throw potions here. There's enough rats to throw 6 potions (which requires you to use 2 Maize kits).

6 potions turns into 18 candy corn elementals, which drop 18 Trick or Treat bags.

One Maize makes 9 elementals. Which means that until the price evens out to 1:9 (Maize Balm : ToT Bags) on the TP, this is profitable.

Also, it's a VERY easy way to get bags for opening without buying them. You can get 750+ an hour, open them, and make/sell cobs to recover the cost of the Maizes. Also, Maizes drop from bags sometimes.

I'm poor as shit, and I don't have the money to exploit the market or anything, but I was always pissed off when I got left behind on these things (cough deadeye cough), so I figured I'd post it now for everyone to get at while Maize is still affordable.

Edit : Let's be conservative and say Trick or Treat bags are 5 silver (they're 6.86 as I write this). 1 maize (which costs 12s), produces 9 bags (which, at 5s, would be 45s). That's a profit of 33s per maize. At rats you get 2 Maize uses every ~25 seconds, so we can be conservative and say 60s a minute, or extra conservative and say 1g/2minutes. That's 30g/hour. Way better than anything around right now. Until the price events out, it's closer to ~50g an hour right now.

Not until Maize hits something around 30-35s will it be slower than other methods of farming.

Hi all

I have recently come back to the game after a long break and I have for a couple of weeks noticed the red, blue and yellow player marks when I have running around and doing stuff.

So this evening I saw one run pass me, while I was in Cursed Shores. I asked the person what it was and he gave me a introduction to the commander thingi. He was nice enough to answer my questions and lead me with him around in the zone for an hour to an hour and a half. It was really fun and I would like to make a shutout to him.

Thank you Guleesh, for giving me a good, first time, experience to the commander concept, and a good time doing events.

This may not mean a lot for many people, but as someone who aren't familiar with these things, it is really nice to have nice people playing the game, who are willing to stop for a sec. and explain things for people who doesn't know it.

I had fun, it was a great way to get more of the cool dynamic world of GW and actual give me a feeling of making a good profit and doing something organized for a change.
