Colin Johanson on creating stickies with key discussion points for every sub-forum

Colin Johanson:

What if every major thread offered a dev sticky at the top that summarized the key discussion points around that area were aware of as a dev team? Wed track the last major update(s) to those areas that shipped live in the sticky thread, and each time a new update is made update that thread accordingly.

https://forum-en.guildwars2.com/forum/game/gw2/Brainstorm-Key-Discussion-Points/first#post4328713

I think this could be a good first step to make development a bit more transparent. The policy still stands though:

Per company policy (see Mike OBriens post for his summary of ArenaNets dev communcation policy) we wouldnt be able to discuss what is currently in development, or what progress were making on it. It would purely be a list of core high level topics we are aware of and think are important in Gw2.

here the other bullet points:

  • not a discussion thread

This would not be a discussion thread well be using the CDI for those developer and player discussions. This would be a closed sticky that simply provides a list of what high level areas were aware of and what weve last done in those areas to help provide a road map for players of things wed like them to discuss and brainstorm. This post would be in an effort to help drive, and help create discussion.

  • no time frame

These lists would have no definitive time frame when they would be updated. Iterative development can be fast, it can be slow (hi precursors!) and sometimes prioritys can change over night based on player feedback, company needs, or even things that occur due to staffing changes from illness, vacation, etc.

  • updates are being made, threads opened

If we decided something that was a key discussion point has either been completed, changed, or removed from our list wed update the sticky thread and also leave an open discussion thread in that forum with a summary of that change of status. If it hasnt been removed from the list, you know its still a core discussion point for the Gw2 development team.

  • focus on the biggest discussion points only

There are way, way too many discussion points in a game as big as Gw2 for us to cover all the things everyone wants to talk about. Wed simply be focusing on a handful of the very top biggest discussion points were concerned with. It doesnt mean we arent working on other stuff, but it can at least help provide a discussion road map to the bigger picture.

  • localisation on that info being made

These sticky threads, and the updates when they change would be localized into all languages on all forums, to ensure were clearly communicating to all our fans rather than just in English.

Can this comment from Colin get some discussion? Don't think many people saw it.

In response to:

It's almost as if Anet is re-launching Guild Wars 2 again for the people who quit during the first month or haven't bought the game yet.

That's nice... But what about the playerbase that has put hundreds or thousands of hours into the game over the past two years and are looking forward to the next step in the development of GW2? :< I almost feel like I would've been better off not having bought the game at launch.

ArenaColin said:

I think that's a totally fair question, as a veteran user I'd wonder that too - why does making the game better for new users benefit me when I want features that benefit me?

The simple answer is: by ensuring the game foundation is solid for new users, we'll be in a place after the feature pack where we can do the kind of things that excite both veteran and new users simultaneously, and we'll be able to retain a much larger percentage of the new or long returning users when they show up. Can't say anything more than that yet - but that's the thinking, you don't need to agree with it, but it's important to know why the decision was made!

Emphasis mine. Cantha confirmed?

Coming back to GW2 this week after a year away. Forums and the web is almost universally negative. Why is that?

I'm not a hardcore video gamer at all, much less MMOs. But I like dabbling in them from time to time, and have enjoyed playing GW2 again lately.

But when I look online, the playerbase - and hell, just about everybody - seems to be up in arms and incredibly toxic about the state of things with GW2 and ArenaNet.

I feel like I'm missing something here, because this goes beyond the garden variety griping I'm used to.

Can somewhat give me the high level overview to catch me up to things?

The "Cupcakes for ArenaNet" Post. In which we plot to flood ANet with baked goods.

Welcome to the Cupcakes for ArenaNet Fundraiser. It's Guild Wars 2's second birthday and this is campaign to send the Devs some eatables. Everyone deserves a cupcake now and then. Who more than this excellent development team that has crafted the great and beloved game that brought us together: Guild Wars 2.

Recently there has been a lot of tension in the subreddit, and on the forums, with hate and down-votes flying everywhere. There are a lot of valid points, and interesting issues being discussed. But poison has been seeping in like Scarlet's Toxic Alliance and dissension creeping like Mordremoth's vines, choking and crushing the once lively and fun discussions the subreddit contained.

But let us all just take a few steps back. Really look at what this game is. A mostly well balanced MMO with no subscription fee and next to no pay to win strategy. Also let us think of all the time, effort, and dedication this wonderful group of men and women have expended to make this exceptional game available to us. Don't you think that deserves a cupcake or two for their birthday?

If you do, please visit The Cupcakes for ArenaNet IndieGoGo Fundraising Page

Show your appreciation, and share you suggestions.

A couple ideas for bonus things are:

A thank you letter mailed to ArenaNet where the players get one sentence of thanks. A massive letter of gratitude and happy birthdays would be nice in my opinion.

A Guild Wars 2 gathering in a large area where a large amount of players could cheer, dance, turn into quaggans, and generally spam say chat with thanks and birthday wishes.

And as a final note, DO NOT DOWNVOTE those who express a their opionions of why they don't want to donate. Those people are players just like you, and have every right to think what they want. I would also ask of those players/users to please not incite arguments or try to stir up anything. This is an effort to do a kindness, don't let your pride get in the way of your morals :)

And thanks to /u/dulfy for suggesting the idea and granting me the priviledge to organize it.

LONG LIVE TYRIA!

[Discussion] September Feature Pack 2014 announced so far.

The Arenanet super-post containing all announcements can be found here.

I am curious how everyone feels about the feature pack so far.

Disclaimer: we still have Friday's Announcement to come, "A Fresh Start" and next week focusing on Collecting and Trading. However, most core gameplay announcements, save tomorrow are all released.

I went and collected all of the announcements so far to see if it makes it a little easier on my mind:

  • World Tournament series announced
  • Standard Enemy models in PvP
  • PvP exclusive armor
  • Balance changes
  • WvW Golem mastery
  • WvW Siege Traps
  • Account Bound Commander Tags & Colors
  • Global Guilds
  • Guild Mission improvements
  • Megaserver updates (group by guild/language)
  • Dungeon Owners leaving will not end a dungeon
  • Crafting UI
  • Performance updates (WvW specifically mentioned)
  • Crafting Profession specific back-pieces
  • New items for leveling?
  • More likely to obtain loot you can use

I am not entirely sure about is why Anet decided to split minimal announcements into so many days. It feels like it goes against their desire to drum up hype. The presentation is almost as baffling as the lack of substance so far. Instead of announcing more things at once, each days announcement has felt more or less underwhelming. For instance, today's reveal contains backpacks already implemented in the Chinese release, and 2 minor features related to leveling characters.

How do you folks feel about it at the moment? What are you looking forward to?

EDIT: Added a list of announced features

Well, look what Arenanet has been teasing...

For extra information, this was posted by WoodenPotatoes today.  The screenshot looks like a beta screenshot, but isn't,  He's confirmed it's from a closed client, and he was allowed to release it by Arenanet's permission.  There is a reason they want to share this.

He also claimed he'd have more new today about upcoming content, including information about a new region. read more

  • It is a soulbound unlimited-use bundle that shoots cake.
  • When picked up, cake provides Nourishment: +40 to all attributes, 10% Karma, 15% MF, 15% XP for 10 minutes. Upon pickup you also receive Sugar Rush, prohibiting more cake consumption for 30 seconds but giving you 2-3 seconds of Swiftness. This nourishment will not replace or strip previous food buffs.
  • The Blaster has two skills, 1 cake launch with no cooldown and 3 cakes on 20 seconds cooldown.
  • The cake has a range 1200 and is a projectile finisher. It cannot be reflected or destroyed, but it does trigger combo fields.
  • You can aim the direction you shoot cake based on your camera. This includes straight up like fireworks, at walls to make inaccessible sweets, or at people's feet to force them to instantly pick up the cake.

Guild Wars 2 is now a 3rd person shooter. You can use Belcher's Bluff Kits to remove the nourishment buff in between rounds. Now we just need an arena...

EDIT: Shares skin with: Scarlet's Kiss 400g - 600g on TP!

Question: Does it work with metabolic primer?

Some Clearyfications made by Chirs Cleary

Safe Spot Standing in a location to hold aggro or attack a monster/boss while it is unable to damage you (basic attack) and does not leash back to its original starting position.

This is an abuse of a geometry and/or pathing bug, and is considered an exploit.

https://forum-en.guildwars2.com/forum/game/dungeons/Safespots-and-Exploits/first#post4338146

Avoiding mechanics by standing in a singular area isnt an exploit, its possible bad dungeon design (for example the cage room in the newer flame and frost fractalsorry I cant remember the name of the dungeon its late). In that fight there are areas in which you can avoid almost the entire fight mechanic, thats an example of poor dungeon mechanic design.

Standing on a rock/ledge/platform while the boss attempts to hit you from below (yes there are some bosses that still have abilities that hit you), is a problem with pathing and the boss not resetting when it cant reach the target. This is exploiting a bug.

Kiting and using geometry (running AROUND pillars and such) is a perfectly valid tactic.

Standing outside a stationary bosss range is not an exploit, the boss should reset after an extended period of time, but is not. This is an example of poor boss implementation, and not an exploit.

Using terrain to block/dodge boss mechanics is also considered a valid tactic (standing behind a pillar when a boss charges).

At this point we are getting very nitpicky at each individual boss and each mechanic in question. Im sure most of you are aware of what is an exploit and what is a mechanic/tactic. We are working on fixing these Safe Spots, but its going to take some time to get it done, and will probably happen over time. (Sorry I am not going to go into particulars for fights/changes)

Ill be very clear here: If a GM finds a player that is using a Safe Spot, that player will be moved out of the safe spot and warned (via in-game text). If they are caught again, that account will be temporarily suspended.

If a GM finds a player that is using a Safe Spot and selling the dungeon run, that account will be temporarily suspended without warning.
