Making the community relevant
I recently read a thread called "do mmo players demand too much"
http://www.guildwars2guru.com/topic/76458-do-mmo-players-demand-too-much/
I also recently read a thread called "do you care about town clothing"
http://www.guildwars2guru.com/topic/77592-do-you-care-about-town-clothing/
The former is an example of what I think of as "bad guru."
The latter is an example of what I've often sought guru out for--nuanced ideas around an issue I myself hadn't thoroughly thought about, and perhaps don't have the technical background to speak to, but appreciate learning about.
I would like to propose a new purpose/forum/option for guru: A guru community letter.
Why would an anet employee paw through reams of repetitive and rambling threads? Why does one voice sharing one good opinion here, and at reddit, and at the Anet forum have any particular weight? It's sweet that we all Must Voice Our Opinion (over and over and over until we have crushed the opposing side with our nastiness) and they've given us the ability to do so. Now it's all just a useless cacophony.
Alternative: Post a guru thread with a prefix of "community letter". Let guru members post ways to improve the issue over a week's time. (sorry all you haters, this would actually be for people who enjoy the game and continue to play it.) Then, the Person Most Passionate (the PMP) drafts a succinct letter with all of the pertinent points of the thread.
That letter is posted as Community Letter Draft. (I'd suggest a wiki but with the behavior I've seen here I just can't recommend it.) The 2nd week everyone responds with rebuttals, grammar corrections, and phrasing suggestions.
A Final Draft is posted during week 3, during which all guru members agreeing to the contents sign their names through "like" or a reply. Now this letter is posted on the Anet official forum in the appropriate thread, along with all the signee names.
Do you see what this would make possible? We would go from a squabbling morass of whiners to a collective with massive intelligence, experience, and reasoned opinions that are well presented. Just an idea of how to collar guru's power and turn the forum into a force for good. Because I believe that there are a ton of good suggestions here that are rarely seen by important eyes... why not make them stronger through a cohesive presentation.
